Virga is precipitation that falls from a cloud but evaporates before it reaches the ground. It can produce rather dramatic and beautiful scenes, especially during a sunset. Helen Grime's Virga was ommissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra in partnership with UBS, as part of the UBS Soundscapes: Pioneers series. First performed by the London Symphony Orchestra in July 2007 at Barbican Hall, London, conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier. Parts are available on hire from the publisher.
