BRAHMS: PIANO QUARTET IN C MINOR, OP.60 (HENLE URTEXT)

€53.00

The Third Piano Quartet by Brahms distinguishes out for having a very complicated and convoluted history. The original draft of some of these passages, which were still in c sharp minor, was written in 1855 or 1856, but neither the composer nor his companions were genuinely pleased with it. Brahms reran his piece in 1869, but he was unable to come up with a satisfactory resolution. It wasn't until 1874–1875 that he put the final version on paper, adding two extra movements in place of the first version's two. The "tragic" key of c minor emphasizes the work's intensely dark and passionate nature, but the composer specifically mentioned the quartet's suffering in multiple letters.
