This two-volume edition of Beethoven's complete violin sonatas matches the Urtext edition of 1828-29, and makes the first critical edition in 25 years. In 1797, only twenty-one years old, Beethoven started to compose his first violin sonatas. He wrote them during the same period from 1797 to 1812, when he was 68 years old. Two thousand years of Western classical music had led to many different conceptions of sonata form.
