Claude Debussy: Suite Bergamasque (Henle Urtext)

Debussy marked the proofs with the year of composition "1890," indicating that this was an early piece even though it was only published in 1905. Without ever publishing it, he had sold the now-lost book to the publisher Choudens in 1890. However, the postponed release date demonstrates Debussy's continued strong belief in the importance of the composition. This four-movement piece gained popularity especially for its slow movement, Clair de lune (HN 391), which seems to conjure the mood of a moonlit night with its distinct aura. Numerous transcriptions for various groupings of instruments show the piece's unwavering appeal as well as that of the entire suite.
